European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
